A collaboration to address rainbow homelessness in Auckland

Making Space works to build capacity within homelessness and housing services in Tāmaki Makaurau to provide safe, non-discriminatory and accessible services for takatāpui and rainbow/LGBTI+ clients.

We’ve worked with housing providers, sector leaders and people with lived experience to develop a framework that supports housing and homelessness services to build their capacity to work with takatāpui and rainbow clients.

We ran a pilot in early 2023 with Te Tāpui Atawhai - Auckland City Mission, Emerge Aotearoa and Housing First Auckland.

We want to reduce the frequency, duration and likelihood of recurring homelessness in rainbow communities.

To achieve this, we have developed a cross-sector approach to build homelessness services’ confidence and capability in working with takatāpui and rainbow people.

We have developed and piloted tools for homelessness service providers to help them make their services safe, affirming, and responsive for takatāpui and rainbow people.

Through this mahi, we hope to improve the experiences of rainbow people accessing housing and homelessness services. In the longer term, our hope is that these positive experiences will start to shift narratives around accessing homelessness services within rainbow communities, which in turn leads to rainbow people getting support with housing when they need it.

Our work is guided by housing and homelessness sector leaders, and lived experience voices of takatāpui and rainbow people who have experienced homelessness.
